What It Actually Means to Be a Fractional Chief Brand Officer

After a decade of brand work, I finally have the language for what I do.
After a decade of brand work across industries, one title has come to describe what I actually do: Fractional Chief Brand Officer.
Not someone who simply creates and runs campaigns. A Fractional Chief Brand Officer is someone who helps brands step back — to clarify their positioning, align their narrative, and build the strategic infrastructure that supports long-term, sustainable growth. It's brand leadership at the executive level, embedded directly into your business, without the overhead of a full-time hire.
It took time to settle into that language. But once I did, everything became clearer — how I work, who I work best with, and why the results look the way they do.
What my CliftonStrengths® revealed about how I lead

I recently revisited my CliftonStrengths results. What I found wasn't surprising — but it was clarifying. Each of my top five strengths maps directly to how I approach brand leadership:
Strategic: I quickly see patterns, gaps, and opportunities others may miss. In brand work, this means identifying what's misaligned, what's missing, and what's quietly undermining the brand before it becomes a visible problem.
Activator: Ideas are only useful if they move into action. Strategy without execution is just a document. I'm wired to move, to build momentum, and to keep brands from getting stuck in analysis.
Futuristic: I'm always thinking about where the brand is going next. Not just what it needs today, but how today's decisions shape tomorrow's positioning, perception, and growth.
Connectedness: Brand, culture, audience, and experience all need to align. When they don't, people feel it, even if they can't name it. My work is about creating coherence across every touchpoint, internally and externally.
Belief: The work has to stand for something real. I'm not interested in manufactured positioning or trend-chasing. The brands I work with have a genuine purpose, and my job is to help them communicate it with clarity and conviction.
Who this work is for
The Fractional CBO engagement is built for established organizations navigating growth, transition, or transformation — founders and executive teams who need senior brand leadership at the strategic level, not just executional support.
I've done this work across cybersecurity education, nonprofit advocacy, public health, and hospitality — including organizations like Great Education Colorado and Families Forward Resource Center. Across every sector, the through line is the same: clarity creates alignment, and alignment creates flow.
If you're at a point in your organization's growth where brand decisions feel harder than they should — or where the external identity no longer reflects the internal direction — that's usually where a Fractional CBO conversation begins.
